Dear August
Dear August don’t leave us
Hardly we’ve seen you
Rest here a while longer
To bookend the summer.
It’s seems only moments
Since young June had arrived
Breathless and panting
With news of long evenings.
As for July, it came and it went
In the blink of an eye
Summer currency spent
To the sound of laughter and cries
Carried up on the sea wind
From down on the beach
The hymns of young children
As they run and they swim.
This sunshine will spill
Into September at least
Prolonging the joy
Extending the feast.
It’s good to hear children
And dogs as they bark
Enjoy running on sand
Playing til dark.
On let it run
On let it roll
Til the sky paints it pink
And the long evening tolls.
Then exhausted they run
With wet sandy feet
Into the mobiles
For something to eat.
These days will pass soon
But the memories long last
On every horizon
A flag and a mast.
