Packing your life in a bag
Your life in a bag
As you leave Kabul Airport
Glad to be parting
Sorry to be leaving
The land of your birth.
Your family and friends
Face an uncertain future
A few belongings are packed
The world is compressed
In a leather hold all.
Holding laughter and sorrow
Memories and clobber
To face the next winter
In Europe’s long shadow.
You have given a service
You’re now paying the price
No good deed goes unpunished
In cruel Afghanistan.
You arrive in our country
With our tears and our thanks
May you settle and flourish
Despite all you suffered.
